The Scott Broshko Memorial Tournament is in memory of Scott Broshko who played in the Midget Division of the Blackfoot Hockey Association until he died in a tragic avalanche in 2003.

Scott Broshko

1987 – 2003

Scott loved hockey.  He was a dedicated student, a talented musician and an enthusiast of many sports, but hockey held a special place in his heart.

He started skating at 2, and playing organized hockey with Blackfoot at 5.  He played all positions over the years, from goalie in Tyke, to a tenacious defenseman, and in time becoming an aggressive, two-way centre.

Scott played hockey the way he lived: with grace, determination and leadership.  His friends and team-mates have this to say about him:

“He always tried to outwork everyone else, and most of the time did.”

“He always kept an upbeat attitude and saw everything in a positive way.”

“He never put people down, or talked behind anyone’s back.”

“Anyone who played for the Warriors that year will always remember Scott, and how he touched us with everything he did.”

Scott, and 6 others, were tragically lost to us far too early in an avalanche in February, 2003.

Let us honour his memory by playing each game and living each day by Scott’s personal motto to always:

Be Your Best!

 2009 Tournament Notes:

Congratulations to the Glenlake Hawks!

Glenlake Hawks won the A Final with a victory over the Trails West Blazers.  PSA 2 won the B final over the hosting Blackfoot Warriors.

The 6th annual Scott Broshko Memorial Hockey Tournament, held December 14, 19th, 2009, was a success on all fronts.

Dave and Donna Broshko opened the tournament.  Dave welcomed the Player, Families and Coaching Staff with a personal greeting focusing on fun and fair play.  Donna baked Scott’s favourite cookies, packaging a bag for each of the players and coaches.  If you were lucky enough to have someone share, you’ll know how wonderful the cookies are!  Donna has kindly shared the recipe which is posted on the website for all to enjoy (see below).

Recognition for all!

In keeping with past traditions, prizes for Most Sportsmanlike players were donated and presented to a player on each of the participating teams at the end of the tournament by the Broshko Family.

The Blackfoot Hockey Association donated pins for all of the participants and the Warriors team donated a prize for the Goalie of the Tournament and recognized the MVP for the playoffs with an award for each team.

The tournament committee, in conjunction with the efforts and energy of the team parents and coaching staff, coordinated a fundraising effort raising a donation of $1051.65 for the Canadian Avalanche Foundation in memory of Scott Broshko.  Thank you to everyone that contributed, especially to those that bought the tickets!

FEEDBACK

Very happy to contribute to the Canadian Avalanche Awareness Society! Thx

Ann

"We were proud to be part of a tournament that supported sportsmanship and honoured this excellent young man.
Glenlake Hawks"

"I thought, as did my son, that the tournament was well organized and conveyed a wonderful message to all of the boys while remembering this talented young man and the qualities that he possessed.  It is wonderful for the boys to play hockey but to also be reminded of the incredible importance of sportsmanship in this game and all others that they participate in.  This tournament provided them the chance to play the game they love and to reflect on these things in a meaningful way."
